UCSD Team Camp - Next 10 + Breakout performers

While most of the collective attention of the high school basketball universe was focused on the Section 7 Team Camp, UC San Diego assembled a quality collection of local and out-of-area teams at the first of two Triton Team Camps.

The camp gave teams not invited to the Arizona event a chance to play in front of the Tritons staff and take home hardware in four divisions, as well as varsity, JV and freshman showcase divisions.

Mountain View of Colorado claimed the championship of the top bracket, the "Triton" bracket, with a win over San Marcos, which had gone undefeated until the final game. Rancho Buena Vista shook off a Friday loss to Del Norte to win 4 straight games and claim the Navy Bracket championship over Cathedral Catholic. San Diego won three straight games to claim the third division title, the Gold Bracket, over Trabuco Hills. And Francis Parker claimed the final bracket championship over Basic High (NV) in the White Bracket.

Bishop's finished 5-1 in the showcase division, with its lone loss coming against undefeated Colorado Academy.

In this report, I'll talk about the next 10 San Diego performers and also mention some players whose performances landed them firmly on my radar - and hopefully yours.

Next 10 Standouts

Patrick O'Brien, Cathedral Catholic

O'Brien was coming off of a solid weekend at the Summer Preview in Corona, had a solid weekend here, helping to lead his team to a 4-2 record, with both losses coming to RBV. At 6-5, O'Brien's best gift is his court vision in drive and kick scenarios, when he is able to get down hill and deliver passes to waiting shooters. Offensively, he can knock down open shots from the college three off the catch and will score on downhill drives, but he must improve playing off of two feet in the paint and adding more explosion to improve his finishing in the paint.

CJ Coleman, 6-5 2025 W, Vista

Coleman appears to have retooled his offensive approach from spring, looking in improved condition and stronger, which allowed him to seek contact and finish through it off of drives at a more consistent clip than in previous viewings. Coleman, who has a developed midrange game and is a solid spot-up shooter, looks like he is adding that third level of scoring at just the right time. He also did a solid job competing on the boards and sliding his feet defensively, both areas that will further bolster his stock.
