It takes two: Torrey Pines, Carlsbad win Section 7 titles
GLENDALE, AZ - On parallel courts, a pair of San Diego teams hoisted championship banners at the Section 7 Team Camp Sunday morning.
Carlsbad jumped out to a 21-2 lead against Eaglecrest of Colorado and didn't look back, winning the Mayo Clinic Bracket with a 61-48 margin.
2025 guard Jake Hall, who put together a dominant tournament showing, led the Lancers with 24 points. His back court mate, 6-3 guard Tony Duckett, scored 17 points.
Torrey Pines was equally dominant, racing out to a 44-23 halftime lead and essentially holding that margin throughout the second half to defeat University High of San Francisco 73-53 to clinch the Leo Foundation Bracket championship.
And, as the Falcons had done all tournament, they got contributions from multiple players: Matin Madadkar led five Falcons in double figures with 21 points. Rising senior guard Dylan Kail, who was one of the breakout players in the division, nearly notched a triple double with 14 points, 11 rebounds and 7 assists.
Senior sharpshooter Max Zylicz contributed 11 points, and Zach Jackson - the team's leading scorer on the weekend - and junior guard Cody Shen each scored 10 points.
The championship game victories capped a strong showing for San Diego teams at the prestigious high school evaluation event, which has rapidly become a favorite among college coaches and media alike.
Montgomery, an early Open Division contender in San Diego, also advanced to the championship game of the Arizona Financial Commission Bracket, but lost to Archishop Mitty for the second time in a week. The Bay Area program defeated the Aztecs in a championship game at last week's California Live event.
Still, with two title game appearances in two weeks, Montgomery has vaulted itself into the statewide conversation of up-and-coming programs.
St. Augustine finished fifth place in the Financial Solutions bracket, shaking off a blowout loss in the second round to Ironwood (AZ) with solid wins over Summit (OR) and Olympus (UT).
San Ysidro finished 4th place in the City of Glendale Bracket, advancing to the semifinals before taking close losses to Deer Valley (AZ) and Manhattan Beach Mira Costa.
Both Santa Fe Christian and Lincoln finished 1-3 on the weekend.
