Centurions beat Morse to open the San Diego basketball season
With his team trailing 44-43, University City sophomore post Ben Gavani delivered the play of the game - and unofficially opened the 2021-22 San Diego Section basketball season with a bang.
A streaking Gavani received fellow sophomore Ash Aska's just in front of the halfcourt line and, after one dribble and two strides, delivered a fierce dunk over a Morse defender and drew an and-1 foul. He'd hit a jump hook a few seconds later to seal a 46-43 win over Morse to open the new season.
Gavani, a long, athletic 6-5+ post, finished with 8 points and 9 rebounds. Yet another University City sophomore, Jaedan Robley, led the Centurions with 12 points. Junior Riley Cass, a 6-1 shooter, added 11 points.
Morse, which was without starting point guard Darnell Green and junior guard Jerron Carter, got a game-high 17 point guard from 6-1 junior guard Rayveon Bush and 14 from fellow junior, 6-3 forward Jonathan Black.
Bush willed his team into a late lead - Morse led 43-39 with 3 minutes left - before the Centurions closed the game on a 7-0 run.
Both teams have some underrated prospects. In the rest of the article, we talk in detail about the players we have mentioned here.
