Cathedral Catholic's hire ends 2023 coaching carousel
The last major head coaching position in San Diego was filled Wednesday when Cathedral Catholic announced the hiring of Graham Bousley as its head basketball coach.
Bousley joins the Dons after a decade of coaching in the collegiate ranks, most recently as the Special Assistant to the Head Coach and Director of Recruiting at Longwood University. Before that, Bousley served as an assistant under head coach Jim Christian at stops at George Washington, Mount St. Mary's and Siena universities. He also was on staffs at Virginia Commonwealth University and Rice after graduating from the University of Wisconsin-Madison.
Bousley replaces Will Cunningham, who stepped down in March to become head coach at Christian High School, where head coach Tim Brown stepped down. Cunningham led the Dons to 3 CIF titles (2012, 2019 and 2020) and amassed a 268-134 record in 14 seasons. Most recently, the Dons went 15-14 and lost in the first round of the CIF Division 1 playoffs.
Cathedral Catholic was the last major HS vacancy during an off season that saw turnover at several prominent schools.
Longtime Santa Fe Christian head coach Chad Bickley stepped down and was replaced TCU assistant coach Matt Carlino.
La Jolla Country Day announced that Pat Casey would become the permanent head coach, replacing interim head coach Mike Ricchiuti, who led the Torreys to the Division 1 title after former head coach DJ Gay departed to Windward last summer.
Longtime Foothills Christian head coach Brad Leaf returned to the Knights two years after stepping down as coach.
Mater Dei head coach Jason Bryant returns to the Crusaders after a year sabbatical.
Morse hired Eastlake assistant and former Mt Miguel interim head coach AJ Stanford to replace Carl Fisher, who stepped down after eight years.
High Tech High San Diego coach Lance Beesley also stepped down after leading the Storm to the CIF Division 3 Semifinals and the best record in school history at 21-9. The story will be updated once his replacement is confirmed.
