San Diego's All-Newcomer team

The group of players mentioned here were brand new to SD's basketball hoops scene in different ways.

Some moved from different locations. Others were first-time varsity players, either freshman or players who got the call from JV. But all had an impact on their respective units.

All-Newcomer Team

Wayne McKinney, 6-0 G, Coronado -- The Lake Oswego (OR) transfer took an otherwise ordinary Islanders team to the CIF Division 3 finals by filling the stat sheet. He averaged 28.4 points, 7.7 rebounds and 3.9 assists.

Mikey Williams, 6-3 G, San Ysidro -- The highly touted freshman lived up to the billing, averaging nearly 30 points per game and leading the Cougars to their first title in school history.

Franky Naguidebe, 6-7 PF, University City -- The transfer from Europe took CIF Division 2 by storm, averaging 17 points and 12 rebounds and collecting an impressive highlight reel of rim-rattling dunks.

Brandon Robles, 6-4 PF, Sweetwater - His one year in San Diego (transferred from Zacatecas, MX) was a memorable one -- Robles averaged 21.1 points and 13.7 rebounds. A unique scoring blend of straight line drives and spot up threes, Robles proved to be a mismatch for most teams.

Jurian Dixon, 6-5 W, San Ysidro - The Cougars' "other" freshman put up numbers that would have made him the leading scorer at just about any other program in San Diego. Averaging 24 points and 7 rebounds, Dixon became a force to be reckoned with during Ysidro's D3 title run.

DJ Ralston, 6-0 PG, San Diego - The Mission Bay transfer had not logged a varsity minute, but quickly assumed a starting role and provided the perfect complement to Cavers standout AJ Burgin in the back court. Averaged 14 points and 5 assists per game en route to All Eastern League second-team honors.

PJ Brinkman, 6-5 PF, Otay Ranch - A transfer from the East Coast, the military brat found a home in the South Bay, where he averaged 17 points and 10 rebounds per game. The lefty was a bruiser on the block and has a jump hook that was difficult to defend.

Torrey Pines Newcomers - The Falcons broke in an almost brand new roster, relying on four JV call-ups from a team that went undefeated for two years and a sophomore transfer from Colorado. Cameron Klein, Diego Campisano, Nate Witte, Matias Clotfelter and Otto Landrum each had big moments for the Open Division runners up.

Martin Gumwel, 6-11 C, Calvin Christian - Not only was Gumwel a freshman, but a newcomer to the country from war-torn South Sudan. He averaged 17 points and 17 rebounds to lead the Crusaders to the doorstep of the D5 title.

Tre Irvin, 5-11 G, Olympian - The Tennessee transfer paired with senior transfer Savaughn Davis to create a formidable back court trio with Gio Martinez. Irvin averaged 9 points per game and wasn't afraid to take big shots.

Deon Spear, 5-11 G, Granite Hills - After not logging varsity minutes in two years ago Christian, Spear became a critical piece of a team that made it to the Division 3 semifinals.

Toby Harris, 5-9 PG, Carlsbad - After appearing in two games as a freshman, Harris assumed the starting guard spot alongside Jailen Nelson and became a Lancer favorite due to his toughness and savvy.

Daisean Desinor, 5-10 G, El Capitan - The athletic combo guard emerged as a reliable guard for the Division 4 finalists, averaging 9 points, good for second on the Vaqueros.

Myles Bennett, 6-0 G, San Diego - The athletic combo guard battled a serious bout with the flu, but became a vital cog to the Cavers D2 title run, averaging 9 points and playing lockdown defense.

Dunkan Nguyen, 5-9 PG, Army Navy - The Seattle transfer became a valuable back court piece for the Warriors, averaging 5 points per game and helping lead them to the 3 seed in the CIF Division 2 playoffs.

Kishaun Matthews, 6-5 G, Hoover - The Chicago-area junior transfer was an immediate fixture in the Hoover starting lineup, averaging 5 points per game and coming up clutch defensively for the Cardinals during their surprise playoff run.
