Full-Time Hoops All Defensive Team
Owen Aschieris came into the CIF Division 1 Championship game riding the confidence that only comes after completely dominating matchup after matchup throughout the season.
But he hadn't faced Lincoln's starting guard Michael Singletary.
The lightning-quick lefty hounded the Eagles Leading scorer into a 4-point performance in which he did not hit a single field goal, prompting SFC Head Coach Chad Bickley to proclaim Singletary "the best defender they had faced all year."
Coaches and players that had faced Lincoln all nodded in agreement, as Singletary regularly neutralized the top perimeter opponent for the Hornets. We nod, too.
Mike Singletary is your Full-Time Hoops Defensive Player of the year.
All Defensive Team:
Jordan Hilstock, Vista- The 6-3 guard was arguably the county's most versatile defender, checking everything from point guards to centers for the undersized Panthers.
Michael Diaz, Orange Glen- Built like a linebacker, the 6-2 senior guard prided himself on being a "shutdown corner" on the basketball court.
Jaylen Arnold, Helix- The 6-5 senior commanded the boards and neutralized the other team's top post threat for the Division 2 champs.
DJ Jackson, Coronado- Unheralded center was the best pound-for-pound rebounding big man in San Diego, and was a force on the interior for the Islanders.
Isaiah Morris, Vista- Feisty and physical on-ball defender regularly checked the opponent's top guard.
Damien Miller, Orange Glen- A pest on and away from the ball, Miller generated steals by simply overwhelming guards or shooting the passing lanes with the best of them.
Ed Fenzi, Mission Hills- One of the top perimeter defenders in San Diego over the past four years.
Taeshon Cherry, St. Augustine- The linchpin of a stout Saints team defense, Cherry blossomed into a bona fide rim protector as a junior.
Jack Peterson, St. Augustine- Always got the call to defend the other team's top guard, and Peterson delivered more often than not.
Darian Norwood, Mt. Miguel - The most versatile senior defender in San Diego, Norwood frequently checked the opposing team's best player, regardless of position.
Second Team
Josue Lara, St. Augustine- Long and crafty senior wing made life difficult for opponents on the perimeter.
Jalen Flanagan, El Camino- Unique in that he was the team's top offensive threat and keyed the Wildcats defense.
Logan Wazny, La Costa Canyon- Underrated and rugged wing defender keyed a very underrated Mavs defense.
Tyler Elsom, Jr. G, Canyon Crest Academy- Underrated on-ball defender frustrated some of the region's top scorers into season-low efforts.
Kale Baldado, Foothills Christian- Bouncy undersized post was a tremendous rim protector for the Knights, averaging 2 blocks per game and altering others.
Dylan Lee, Helix- Lockdown defender on the perimeter for a physical defensive group.
Cade Kinney-Shackleford, Torrey Pines- One of the top position defenders in San Diego, Kinney-Shackleford doesn't rack up steals, but stalls offenses and gets 5-second calls.
Miles Norris, Helix- Improved defender has also become a imposing rim protector due to his freakish length and timing.
Alex Dumas, Lincoln- A bully of a defender, Dumas used his physicality to frustrate players on the perimeter.
Trey Anderson, Mater Dei Catholic- Anderson bloomed into a big-time defender on the interior who could step out and guard the perimeter in a pinch.
Jamari Brown, Serra- Super underrated and undersized senior "big" was a fierce rebounder and on-ball defender for the Qs.
Taurus Samuels, Jr. PG, Vista- Overshadowed by his brilliant defensive teammates, Samuels was a top-end defender in his own right.
Jake Gilliam, Torrey Pines- Cerebral big man's defensive IQ helped him to overcome his physical deficiencies, quarterbacked a stiff Falcons defensive group.
JJ Overton, Rancho Bernardo- Long, crafty and aggressive combo guard didn't back down from a defensive challenge.
